WRITING

My students work hard to create wonderful stories!  We always make sure to begin each sentence with a capital letter, use pinky spaces in between each word, reread the sentence to make sure it makes sense and end each sentence with a punctuation mark.

MATH

This year we are exploring many new and different things in Math.  Your child works hard everyday to engage in hands-on learning activites that enhance their number sense.  We are focusing on numbers along with counting and cardinality.  The following a list that you can use to assess your child's progress and mastery of the skills we are covering in class.

Math Learning List:

  • Can your child count to 100 by 1's, 5's and 10's?
  • Can your child count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence? (instead of having to begin at 1? ex: start at 5 and count on to 10.)
  • Can your child identify and write numbers 0-30?  Can your child represent anumber of objects with a written numeral 0-30?
  • Can your child count to answer "how many" questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration?
  • Does your child understand that the last number name said when counting tells how many regardless of the arrangement?
  • Does your child say the number names in standard order when counting objects using one-to-one correspondence?
  • Can your child answer "how many" questions up to about 20 objects?
  • Can your child represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings and/or sounds.
  • Can your child solve addition and subtraction word problems and add and subtract wihtin 10 ex: by using objects or drawings to represent the problem?
  • Can your child identify whether the number of objects in a group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group by using matching and counting strategies?
  • Can your child classify objets into given categories, count the number of objects in each category and sorty the categories by count?

Jordan works hard with his partner to build numbers!

Aa'Nia and Brandon had a blast making edible dominoes to practice counting on!

Jamyra and Megan are comparing groups of M&M's to determine which group is the greatest, least or if any groups are equal!

      READING

My students work hard to learn new things everyday!  I encourage you to work with your child to identify all of his/her letters and their sounds.  Also, it is never too early to start reading simple consonant vowel consonant words with your child.  The more your child is exposed to reading and blending sounds in words the more fluent they will become.

*Work with your child to become more fluent with naming his/her letters*

Aa Bb Cc Dd Ee Ff Gg Hh Ii Jj Kk Ll Mm Nn Oo Pp Qq Rr Ss Tt Uu Vv Ww Xx Yy Zz

*Work with your child to isolate the initial or first sounds in words*

Say the following words.  Say the sound you hear at the beginning of each word.

bat--/b/          slide--/s/           flag--/f/         jump--/j/        mouse--/m/

lamp--/l/        wish--/w/           tackle--/t/      star--/s/         dinosaur--/d/

*Work with your child to segment the sounds in words.*

Listen to the following words.  Say ALL of the sounds you hear in the word.

mat--/m/ /a/ /t/                  top--/t/ /o/ /p/                   cap--/c/ /a/ /p/

lamp--/l/ /a/ /m/ /p/           pen--/p/ /e/ /n/                  stop--/s/ /t/ /o/ /p/

Maurice and Lionel are working together in the ABC center to build and blend CVC words!
